City of Frisco - Transportation Design

Between 2010 and 2020 the City of Frisco experienced a rapid boom of growth. Population doubled from just under one hundred thousand to over two hundred thousand in less than a decade.

Frisco recognized around this time that roads can only be widened by so much, and as Frisco grew in density there was a growing need for transportation solutions. It was my task to look into the ways that Frisco might utilize next generation public transportation in the near future.

Process

Define

The primary objective of my work with the City on this project was to determine the value and possibility of implementing driverless vehicles as a form of transportation. If driverless was determined to not fit, alternative public transportation methods were to be investigated.

Analyze

Qualitative survey data from several dozen Frisco residents was analyzed in order to determine residents feelings about public transportation solutions. In addition respondents provided the hot spots within Frisco in which they wanted to see public transportation available.

Create

Utilizing the location data from surveys, as well as research into public transportation models in other cities, several route designs were created and lightly tested.

Survey Results

The survey that was conducted for this project mirrored the Frisco population within acceptable margins, and allowed for a great glimpse into how Frisco citizens feel about transportation within the city.

Routes and Research

As the routes were being designed for this project, much research was done on how transportation gets designed in other cities. The key takeaway from this research was the usefulness of hub and spoke routes; a design in which a central route connects commuters with several routes that reach further out.

Presentation to leadership

My team and I brought our work to the leadership of the City of Frisco and presented the route designs as well as our analysis of the data to a members of city council, the chamber of commerce, and city planners.
